Are you nearing the end of your treatment with traditional braces in Belmont? No doubt, you are looking forward to the day when your braces are removed and you can start to enjoy all the benefits of your new smile. Still, life after braces might come with some challenges and sensations that you did not anticipate. In this blog post, we will discuss some things to keep in mind as you adjust to your new circumstances.
Keeping Your Teeth Straight
After your braces are removed, your orthodontist or dentist will provide you with a retainer. A retainer’s job is to prevent your teeth from drifting back out of place. Some retainers are fixed in the mouth, while others are removable. If yours is removable, you must be diligent about wearing it as often as instructed. For most people, this means keeping it in your mouth whenever you are not eating or cleaning your teeth. After some time, you might be able to transition to wearing it only at night.
Your Teeth May Be Sensitive
You might be tempted to immediately dig into foods that were off-limits to you while you had your braces on. However, a word of caution is in order. It is common for people to experience heightened dental sensitivity after their braces come off. This is usually temporary, but until the sensitivity subsides, it may be in your best interests to be cautious around crunchy, chewy, and acidic foods, as well as any food that is extremely hot or cold.
Calluses Are Normal
To protect your sensitive oral tissues from your braces, you might have developed calluses on the inside of your lips or cheeks. These can feel strange, but rest assured that they are normal. In most cases, calluses begin to go away within a few months.
Discoloration Is Usually Not a Big Deal
Your teeth might look a little discolored after your braces are removed. This could be because you developed new stains around your brackets, while the enamel under your brackets stayed the same color as it was before you got braces. Plaque or tartar accumulating around the braces might also be to blame.
Talk to your general dentist about your concerns. A thorough teeth cleaning may make your teeth look better. You can also ask about a professional teeth whitening service, which is a quick way to remove even stubborn stains. However, keep in mind that if you wish to get your teeth whitened, it may be wise to wait a few months after your braces are removed. This will allow any braces-induced sensitivity to subside before your cosmetic procedure.
After your braces are removed, you might have to make a few adjustments, but the reward of a healthy smile is well worth it!
