We often see patients who struggle with a degree of dental anxiety. If you are one of them, you can be certain that we have the greatest empathy for you! We want to put your mind and body at ease, so we offer two different types of sedation dentistry in our Belmont practice. They both serve as effective and low-risk ways to put an end to dental anxiety! Continue reading below to learn more about them.
Nitrous oxide is the mildest form of sedation that we offer. It is administered through a nasal mask. All you have to do is inhale a mixture of nitrous oxide gas and oxygen, and within minutes, you should start to feel relaxed. (Some patients also get a little giddy, which is why nitrous oxide is commonly known as “laughing gas.”) We can adjust your dosage of nitrous oxide throughout your treatment. After your procedure is complete, we will remove the mask, and you should start to feel like yourself again in no time at all. In fact, it should be perfectly safe for you to drive yourself home and resume other normal activities.
Instead of using a mask, oral conscious sedation is administered in pill form. We prescribe a sedative, and you swallow it shortly before your treatment is scheduled to begin. Within 15 minutes or so, you may start to feel drowsy, heavy, and very relaxed. Although you might drift off to sleep, you will not be completely unconscious. After your appointment, you may remain under the effects of the sedation for several hours or longer, so you will need a trusted adult available to drive you home. Once the medication wears off, you might not have any memory of what occurred during your appointment.
